Gular Primed For Penn-Can 'King of the Can' Saturday; Bridgeport Charlie Bray Memorial Up Next

GREEN LANE, PA - This time around, Mike Gular hopes the breaks go his way at Penn-Can (Pa.) Speedway.

Just over two months ago, Gular was stripped of what could have been a resume-building victory at the Susquehanna, Pa., oval during its 'Hot Summer Night' 75-lap Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modified Tour event. Instead, Gular's car was left powerless in the infield - out of fuel - while Jeff Rudalavage flashed under the checkered first for a $4,500 payday.

Gular, 26, had marched from 19th starting position through an all-star field to lead by the lap-50 mark and was firmly in command of the race when the car's fuel cell ran dry entering the white-flag lap.

Shaking off the disappointment, Gular and the Terry Fasnacht-fielded T&S Motorsports team return to Penn-Can Saturday (Oct. 24) for the 'King of the Can' 60-lap event. A $5,000 top prize this weekend could ease the August pain for the Green Lane, Pa., second-generation driver.

"We're all looking forward to getting back to Penn-Can," said Gular, who ran regularly at the Reed Miller- and Al Wilcox-promoted track for three seasons, capturing the 2007 Modified championship and six career victories.

"For the last RoC race, we were off a little in the heat race, made some changes and probably were as good as we've ever been there. We hope to get the car that good this weekend."

Time has passed, but the loss of a 'major event' victory still stings for Gular.

"It seems like we're always right there in the big races," he said. "We haven't been able to get one. We've got another shot this weekend."

Gular's last two big-race starts this season have resulted in top-five finishes. He was fourth in Grandview (Pa.) Speedway's BPG Racing Freedom 76 on Sept. 19 and placed third Oct. 10 at Five Mile Point (N.Y.) Speedway in the Short Track SuperNationals presented by Dart Machinery.

Overall, it was a productive season for Gular, who placed second in the special-event Thunder on the Hill Series 358-Modified standings (winning a Thunder race on July 15) and netted top-10 efforts in the final points tallies for Big Diamond (Pa.) Raceway (Friday nights) and Grandview Speedway (Saturday nights).

To complete the month of October, Gular heads to Bridgeport (N.J.) Speedway on Oct. 31, where he is set to debut in the Glenn Hyneman-owned Keystone Racing No. 126. The South Jersey oval hosts the Charlie Bray Memorial, a Tri-Track Series race paying $4,000 to the winner.

Gular was slated to make his first run in Hyneman's big-block on Sept. 26 at Bridgeport, but rain after hot laps curtailed that effort.
